Description

Everything larger than life baseball hero "Babe" Ruth did, he did in a big way. Whether it was launching homers, downing beers, or lending his name to product endorsements, Ruth was gargantuan in the task. From the vast galaxy of Ruth endorsements, comes this linked pair of Quaker Oats relics, with a Spalding "Babe Ruth Home Run Special" baseball, and a Quaker Oats letter to a contest winner.

The letter dated 7/26/34 on "The Quaker Oats Company" letterhead, was issued to a winner of the "Babe Ruth Limerick Contest". Signed by Quaker Oats Vice President of Advertising Donald B. Douglas, this ancient correspondence announces the award of "one of Babe Ruth's Baseballs" to a contest participant. The letter also lists weekly winners, who received one of these prized baseballs, and concludes with the statement "Thanking you for your interest in our radio program". Though it bears multiple folds, this antique letter remains surprisingly crisp and clean.

The Babe Ruth Home Run Special baseball was one of the most popular balls of the 1920s-1930s. Blue and red stitching suggest the ball offered here dates from the 1920s, as later models are reported as having red stitches only. Manufactured by Spalding, this "No. 3RC" model baseball reports in (VG) condition, with moderately faded factory labeling stamps, that include a Ruth facsimile signature on the sweet spot.
