Description

Thrust into the October spotlight early in his spectacular career, Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr. is the subject of this autographed 1983 World Series watercolor painting. Framed to dimensions of 19-1/4 x 16-1/4” under white matting with orange and black accents, the colorful abstract depicts Ripken waiting his turn at the plate, intently eyeing the on-field action with his bat held above his back. Executed in pencil, Ripken’s signature projects (“8”) strength and clarity. (Local artist George Kalwa also signed in pencil and inscribed “Memorial Stadium 1983.”) Other identifiable objects include the orange-and-black bunting lining the lower deck façade. Ripken’s home apparel pinpoints the scene to Memorial Stadium, and teammate Dan Ford is in the batter’s box, as no other right-handed hitter preceded Ripken during the ’83 contests played in Baltimore. James Spence Authentications cert/sticker #F68568.
